Sample Service Project Options:

The following are the opportunities offered on the Rutgers–Camden Day of Service. When completing the registration form, please select the project that most closely aligns with your interests and we will try our best to match you.

Park clean-up:This activity will involve participants working side-by-side in public park spaces in the City of Camden to remove trash from the public space and beautifying the space. Armed with tools and bags, teams of volunteers will work to clear the spaces. This project ensures the park spaces are places where residents can recreate and have fun.

Park restoration:This activity will involve participants working side-by-side in public park spaces in the City of Camden to improve the physical environment of the park. Depending on the individual park space, it may include replacing basketball, tennis, and soccer nets; painting walls, benches and play equipment; or doing planting projects. This project supports access to public safe space where residents can recreate and have fun.

Neighborhood cleanup:This activity will involve participants working side-by-side with neighborhood residents in South Camden to do a neighborhood cleanup. Armed with tools and bags, participants will help the neighborhood residents clear out a vacant lot they identified and help prepare that lot for later development and restoration after the day of service. By clearing this vacant lot, we empower residents to reclaim unused spaces in their neighborhood through partnership with a local greening and urban farming organization supporting this cleanup site.

Neighborhood restoration:This activity will involve participants working side-by-side with a neighborhood organization to renovate a space within the building. This project will transform the space into a useable meeting room for community members and a program space for the organization when the community is not using the space. By restoring this room, we enable a neighborhood organization additional space to reach and serve their neighbors

Painting Rain-barrels:This activity will involve participants working side-by-side to paint rain-barrels for community members’ homes. Rain-barrels are important tools that community members can use to save money on water bills and keep their basements and streets from flooding. By painting and preparing the rain-barrel for community use, we are helping beautify the neighborhoods, providing a free service to neighbors, and saving neighbors money. This project is supported by a local greening and urban farming organization.
